If you're looking for excellent downhill skiing Wisconsin, Granite Peak delivers. With a 700 ft. vertical drop and a 1900'+ top elevation, this Wisconsin ski resort rises above the surrounding area like a monolith. Furthermore, because its base city, Wausau, Wisconsin lies comparatively in a valley, Granite Peak's height seems practically dizzying compared to some other ski areas in the state.
Granite Peak (also known as Rib Mountain) was formed two billion years ago when sand and heat created a bed of quartzite which later became a "mountain" or rock formation. Eons of wind, rain, and freezing temps have eroded the soil, most of which is made of sandstone. Being much harder than sandstone, the quartzite remains and the countryside around it has dropped hundreds of feet. This weathering from the elements is what gives us the base for 74 runs over 410 acres which is serviced by 7 lifts.
Granite Peak was established in 1937 when residents of Rib Mountain (the town), gathered and cleared the hillside to make way for ski runs, making it one of the first ski areas in North America. Using granite from the hillside, a stone lodge was created which today boasts a tavern for skiers to rest, relax and indulge in a libation or two. Four on-site restaurants handle visitors' appetites.
To ensure downhill skiing Wisconsin perfection, this resort boasts superb grooming and abundant snow. Acre upon acre of wide-open beginner slopes make up this resort as well as mile-long runs for intermediate skill levels. There are two advanced runs with lots of features and steep, steep, steep expert chutes. Granite Peak says you can ski for days and still discover new runs! They offer equipment rental and a pro shop. This resort is also part of Rib Mountain State Park, which offers camping as well as miles of hiking trails in the summer.
At the base of the mountain is Wausau, Wisconsin, which, during my recent visit, impressed me immensely. Founded as a logging town, it's history has been preserved by the wonderful period architecture that is evident downtown. This town is very clean and pretty. Since Wausau is the county seat of Marathon County, there is much industry there and much to see and do including theater, museums, dining and shopping.
If you decide to visit Granite Peak, treat yourself to a visit to Wausau. It's right down the hill, after all and a trip into town would really round out your getaway.
