Located about an hour from the Wisconsin/Illinois border, Chicagoans, among others, love to frequent this laid-back destination for a getaway from the big city. There is much to see and do here and it's only another hour's drive to Baraboo and Wisconsin Dells.

Part of what makes Madison, Wisconsin so fun is that it is home to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Madison university element gives the town a young, liberal feel. As a result, the music and nightlife caters to twenty-somethings and beyond. It also happens to be the capital of the state and the county seat of Dane County, and has been voted the best place to live in the US more than once.

There are numerous lakes in and around the city and in fact, Madison is also known as "The City of Four Lakes." Some of the lakes in the area include Lake Mendota, Lake Monona, Lake Waubesa, and Lake Kegonsa.

Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts will be happy to learn that the lakes are well-known for watersports like fishing, water skiing, wake boarding, tubing, canoeing, windsurfing, kayaking and sailing.

The lakes are also known for winter sports like ice fishing, ice skating, cross-country skiing, ice hockey, snow kiting and even ice boating.

Lake Mendota, for one, has a shoreline dotted with luxury homes and condominiums. You can dine along the water's edge and take in lake views and breathtaking sunsets.

Lake Kegonsa is a 12,000 year old glacial lake with a State Park offering camping as well as fishing and water sports mentioned above. Madison is extremely bike friendly which means there are bike lanes and lots of trails - in fact, Madison has the largest bike trail system in the country.

If you love music, Madison has a huge music scene. Take in a concert at the Overture center or hit up the bars to listen to local live bands. Sports enthusiasts will love watching a game at the Kohl Center.

Other events worth checking out are the festivals like The Taste of Madison, or visit the wonderful exhibits at the Madison Zoo.

Whatever your taste for entertainment, there is always something to do in Madison Wisconsin.
