Minocqua Wisconsin

My sister's cabins are located about five miles south of Minocqua Wisconsin in Oneida County.

This incredibly beautiful footage exemplifies the area. And this is just one of lakes and some
of the things you can do here.
Imagine the family memories you could create . . .
The area is absolutely riddled with lakes and things to do no matter what time of year you choose to visit.

Boating, skiing, wakeboarding. If you have energy, you won't be board (oops! I mean, bored).

Tubing is great for those not so able to stand on skis (like me). As you can see, it's just as much fun and while not as athletic as skiing, it still requires some balance and skill.

Scott Kirby live in Minocqua. A sampling of some of the excellent live entertainment in the area.

What a cool dog!

And even the less skilled people (like me) have fun, no matter what time of year!

Minocqua Wisconsin is actually an island separated from the mainland by the winding tendrils of Lake Minocqua. To the north is Woodruff and Arbor Vitae, and to the south is Hazelhurst. If you head east, you will find St. Germain, Lake Tomahawk and a bit further away, Eagle River. Click here for a map. You can zoom in and out and even get driving directions.

Minocqua, known locally as "The Island City," was settled in 1889 and is part of Wisconsin’s Northwoods. Being heavily forested, the natural resources of the Northwoods were unabashedly exploited by loggers and lumbermen in the early days. Fortunately, due to Federal assistance and hard work by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the area is rebounding and thriving once again.

If you can think "lumberjack," you’ve got a good start in understanding the Minocqua Wisconsin area. Mile after mile of pine, birch and hardwood forests, accompanied by myriad glacial lakes and bogs make this area a sportsman’s paradise. These forests are also a haven for wildlife such as deer, black bear, fischer, badger, beaver, bald eagles, owls, rare songbirds and water fowl. Even the more commonly seen squirrel and woodpecker look much different than they do just a few miles south of the area, making your country drive quite rewarding and productive, if what you seek is a change of pace. Because the landscape changes so dramatically as you approach the area, you will be embarking upon a completely different world with its own unique climate.

Speaking of climate, it is cooler in the summer than southern Wisconsin, not too cool to swim, but not so hot that you feel like you must melt under an air conditioner. In the winter, it almost feels warmer than more southern regions. This sensation of winter warmth is partially due to the forests that act as a windbreak, which is not available to other areas of the state. In some areas of Wisconsin, the wind can be quite formidable, sending chill factors to frigid depths. Minocqua is also sunnier in the winter compared to other midwestern locales.

Another reason for the perceived winter warmth could be the Schnapps and Leinenkugels that flow freely in the area's pubs and taverns! (Always drink responsibly, please.) If you're interested in the average year-round temperatures in the area, click here for an official table of information.

Because of the intense forests, the soil is acidic and not very suitable for farming. However, it is excellent for berry production, like cranberries, which is one of the area's main agricultural products. What this means is that you won't see the characteristic red barn and silo that you do elsewhere in the state. The sparse population coupled with log cabins nestled quietly in the woods is more characteristic of the landscape.

Minocqua Wisconsin is a forested paradise very close to home. It is possible to get a complete change of scenery and drive just a few hours to get it. You make your trip as lavish or inexpensive as you choose. Pack a cooler or buy groceries in town and have your own BBQs, eating your very own catch of the day, or go into town and live it up! It's all available to you in Minocqua, Wisconsin.

No matter what you do or how you spend your time in the area, you will be impressed by the beautiful sunsets, the glorious mornings in the pine scented air and the incredible wealth of wildlife that is available, no--tangible--just by taking a walk down the lane or a drive along the county roads.

I've collected some videos I found from people who visited the area. Take your time and see the fun they've had and the fun you can have, too, when you come to visit.
