This is snowmobile Wisconsin heaven.
Besides being excellent snowmobile country, St. Germain is home of the Snowmobile Hall of Fame and Museum which exhibits vintage sleds, among other things. It is down the road from Minocqua, but before Eagle River and is situated among heavy forests. Its business district consists of quaint shops, supper clubs, taverns and stores that dot the scenic highway. There are lakes everywhere and the river runs along side the road. Like all towns in Northern Wisconsin, St. Germain is beautiful and someplace you'll want to visit whether it be by snowmobile in the winter, or car in the summer.
The birthplace of the snowmobile is Sayner, an unincorporated community in the city of Plum Lake, Wisconsin. If you keep traveling in the same direction past St. Germain and Eagle River you'll travel the winding road that leads to it. By the time you've made it that far, you are deep inside the forest and it is very quiet. You can drive for several miles with just a glimpse of a neighbor, so this is quite rural. Junipers and other tall pines are very thick and the snow hangs in the trees like marshmallow coating.
