The largemouth bass is the largest member of the sunfish family and identifiable by a band made up of a series of dark spots on its sides. It is large fish with a large, forward jutting mouth, averaging 12 to 20 inches and 1 to 5 pounds. Living in shallow water habitats, among reeds, waterlilies and other vegetation, river backwaters, weedy bays and extensive weed beds of larger lakes, this popular game fish is common throughout Wisconsin. They prefer clear, non-flowing waters where cover is available.
