Wisconsin Dells
For my family and me, the Wisconsin Dells holds a special place in our hearts. We made several visits to the Dells on our summer vacations and seven of us (Mom, Dad and five of us kids), would stroll the streets, gazing at the wondrous activities and partaking in the (then) penny arcades and other fun activities. Who knew Skee Ball was so much fun? (Uh oh, now I've gone and given away my age.) There was food and candy and sodas for the kids and ice-cold beer and grown-up activities for Mom and Dad. Back then, we spent summer days making our way up and down those streets, but returning recently, I can honestly say I don't even recognize the place. I would describe it now as a massive family-oriented amusement park, but it's not all about kids, either.
Just being there gets your adrenaline pumping. I was there in the off-season and even then, the excitement was palpable. There are so many things to do and see it would certainly take several days to hit the main attractions and several trips to have seen it all. Even by then, I'm sure new things will have arrived. The possibilities are seemingly endless there. I guess that's the intention. They definitely don't want anyone to get bored. I used to think of it as a place for summertime fun. But now, technology has developed so that you can visit the Dells year round and still have plenty to see and do. Places like the Kalahari Resort, other Wisconsin Dells resorts and Wisconsin Dells water parks make this possible.
Now, what I call Wisconsin Dells is actually Lake Delton and the city of Wisconsin Dells together. It's two towns of non-stop entertainment that has grown together, so even though there actually is a line of demarcation between them, you, as a visitor won't really even notice it.
Some of you might be wondering about Lake Delton in that they had a problem last year. I was told it is no longer there. In case you've heard that, let me tell you, that is wrong information. While the lake itself may have morphed into something like a river or a stream, Lake Delton, the town, is alive and well. I didn't see a hint of a problem where I was and I went all over the place. In fact all I saw was jaw-dropping resorts and mile after mile of amusements.
Wisconsin Dells, the city, isn't really that old. It wasn't actually named Wisconsin Dells until 1931 and before that was named Kilbourn City, which was founded in 1857. Prior to being the resort and recreation area that exists today, it was a lumbering area. The town came to be when the railroad bridged the Wisconsin River and then, because of its natural beauty, it gradually built into a tourist area.
The Dells of the Wisconsin River is what created the attraction by tourists. The actual "Dells" are the incredible sandstone formations that were created out of the Wisconsin River by a catastrophic flood some 15,000 years ago. The area was not formed by glaciation like many other parts of Wisconsin. Instead it was in what is known as The Driftless Area. It was the melting of the glacial lake and the breaking of an ice dam that created a wall of water so immense that it carved wild and unusual formations into the rock. These rocks and formations can be seen by taking boat tours on the river. That Wisconsin River is a winding, beautiful body of water that flows gently and majestically throughout a large portion of the state.
On this page, we will explore Wisconsin Dells, Lake Delton and the surrounding area and highlight the attractions that will bring wide-eyed amazement and lifetime memories to you and your family. Those lucky enough to be living in the Midwest have got to see the Dells at least once. Those of you not so close, really should visit as well and I'll try to give you information on how to get you there.
You do need to visit. Seriously.
You will be amazed.
