![]() When you see the giant cow, you'll know you're at Ehelenbach's Chalet. They've got great Buffalo Jerky! Setting out from there, I grabbed an exit ramp a few miles down the road and took a windy country road on down to Devil's Head. It was a gorgeous drive. Growing up in Northern Illinois, I always had this idea that there was "no" wildlife in this neck of the woods. Boy do things change when you get older! With a keen eye, I spotted lots of different creatures along the roads and being the budding wildlife photographer that I am, I caught a pic of this fellow in a tree that hung over the road. Isn't he magnificent? I'm pointing this out to those of you city slickers like me who really need to get out to the country more often. There is lots to see along your route if you take your time and look and if you leave early enough, there's no reason you can't. ![]() Look at this magnificent creature peering down at me from a tree along the road. The countryside on this route was very pastoral. The terrain is quite hilly and scenic. Clusters of trees hug windy creeks that cut through cornfields and meadows. Of course you'll see farms and pastures, but they're very picturesque here on this stretch of road. ![]() ![]() When I got to Devil's Head, I noticed the Old Schoolhouse restaurant that lies on the corner across from the entrance. I've read that they have good food and someone noted their Chicago Style pizza was great. Now Devil's Head itself has four restaurants and they have lodging, too, but it's good to know there are options, in case you need it when you're out Wisconsin skiing. ![]() The restaurant across from the entrance. Devil's Head is not far from Baraboo or the Dells, and after I visited the ski area, I traveled on down to Baraboo. It was a gorgeous drive that passed by the Ice Age Trail. (More on that on another page.) To get into the ski area, you turn in as indicated by the sign with the arrow. You drive in, down and around. When you come through, you end up in the parking lot. This is kind of cool because you can ski into the resort from your car. ![]() Road to Baraboo ![]() Trail map at Devil's Head ![]() Devil's Head I've provided some pics below of one of the trails, and outbuildings at the resort. As you can see, the trails were recently groomed as indicated by the "stripes" in the snow. ![]() You can see the freshly groomed snow. Devil's Head has a 500' vertical drop with its top elevation being 995'. It boasts having 300 acres of terrain, 10 ski lifts, 28 trails, with the longest run being 3500 ft. I found the resort to be quite beautiful with the runs looking quite inviting. Supposedly, they're not the most vertical slopes in Wisconsin, but they are long and provide you with nice cruising. That's just my speed :). ![]() Beautiful countryside is breathtaking and the runs are long. There are ski rentals, a pro shop, lodging and restaurants here and the beauty of the countryside is soothing to the soul. Feel free to check out the accommodations on the Devil's Head website at www.DevilsHeadResort.com it will surely round out your Wisconsin skiing experience. Or search below to find nearby hotels.
