Wisconsin Wineries
There are Wisconsin wineries in virtually every area of the state. What better way to spend your getaway than experiencing the bounty of the heartland?
One Wisconsin winery has been in existence since the 60's and most, if not all, are well-established businesses that have developed award-winning, hand-crafted wines. Who'd have thought grapes would grow in Wisconsin? It's not an easy task, but they do. In fact, the first vineyards were planted in Wisconsin in the early 1800s when German immigrants brought their winemaking traditions to the New World. Some plants were very difficult to get started, but over time, growing techniques were developed and Wisconsin is able to produce enough grapes to account for at least a portion of the state's wine production.
Besides grapes, many Wisconsin wines are made from fruit, making them what is called "country wines" or ciders, meads and perries. Apples, pears, cherries, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and cranberries all grow very well in Wisconsin and these boutique wineries have found methods to make them delicious and very drinkable.
There are many who enjoy a casual glass of wine now and then, and there are those who are actual connoisseurs. The good news is anyone can take wine tours or even partake in a wine tasting tour, although a wine tasting tour is only available to those 21 years of age and older. I've been to several wine tastings and they are quite pleasant. The vintner provides samples of his product, usually beginning with lighter varieties and gradually steps up each sample to end with the premier product of the winery. It's a social activity and a nice, relaxing way to spend a weekend afternoon. You get to sip the wares and view the products on display. Music is sometimes provided and depending on where you go, there are views of the countryside and comfortable seating in which to enjoy your samples. Snacks are provided throughout a tasting to cleanse the palate, but even though the wine samples are small, be careful – the tastings can sneak up on you! It's best to have a bite to eat before or after, so the samples don't go to your head.
